Citizen Eco-Drive. Powered by light.

Filed under: News — csadm @ 4:32 pm

CITIZEN created the world’s first light-powered analogue quartz watch over 40 years ago in 1976.

The technology was named Eco-Drive – acknowledging its eco-friendly origins.

It converts any kind of light into energy to power a watch and stores the surplus on a power cell.

On a full charge, an Eco-Drive watch runs for months even in darkness with no need for regular battery replacement.
As a light-power pioneer, Citizen has continued to explore new possibilities.

No need for regular battery replacement

Once upon a time, everyone accepted that quartz watches had to have their batteries replaced at regular intervals. But the advent of Eco-Drive overturned the conventional thinking. Eco-Drive is a light-powered technology that drives watches by capturing light and converting it into energy using an inbuilt solar cell.
Suddenly the hassle of replacing batteries was a thing of the past.

It pulls power from any light source

Eco-Drive is designed to charge from ordinary everyday light sources like indoor fluorescent lighting and desk lights. You can go about your everyday life confident that your watch will never stop.

Runs for over six months – even in darkness

Do you need light to generate power for your watch all the time? Not with Eco-Drive. A single full charge is enough to keep Eco-Drive working for over six months in total darkness. Indeed, some models equipped with power save function can run for as long as seven years!

Citizen watches are now part of the Cool Stuf collection by our very own Kara Jewellers of PNG.

The rise and rise of realme

Filed under: News — csadm @ 4:14 pm

The roots of realme can be traced back to 2010 as a sub-brand of OPPO that at the time was called OPPO Real.

In 2018, the former vice president of Oppo, Li Bingzhong (Sky Li) pinched the “real” brand name and decided to use it to start up his own independent brand – realme.

realme found initial success in India and it is now the fourth largest smartphone brand there – surpassing Oppo and competing for market share with the likes of Xiaomi, Samsung and Vivo.

It wasn’t until 2019 that realme entered the Chinese domestic market and shortly after entered the Eurpoean market.

realme is now the world’s fastest-growing smartphone brand.

In November 2020 it had reached the 50 million smartphone sales milestone having entered 61 markets worldwide.

Last year Forbes profiled the company, describing it as “youth focused” and “positioning itself as a disruptor”.

“realme strives to take the leap in improving the accessibility of cutting-edge technologies” – referencing the company’s motto “Dare to Leap”.

According to its website realme’s DNA is “young, stylish, real and outstanding” with a vision that is to become a “healthy and sustainable enterprise” and a mission to “let more young people enjoy the happy life brought by beauty of technology.”

Talk about dare to leap! Thanks to Cool Stuf, realme can now add Papua New Guinea to its footprint.
